European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
