Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
